The Surgeon General’s call to end the opiate crisis

According to the Surgeon General… long term opiate therapy is appropriate for pts  active cancer, palliative, and end-of-life care… read the definition of PALLIATIVE CARE  below.. how many chronic pain pts have a cause of pain that there is NO WAY TO IMPROVE THE CONDITION ?

2 Long-Term Therapy Considerations

Experts agreed that before opioid therapy is initiated for chronic pain outside of active cancer, palliative, and end-of-life care, prescribers should determine how effectiveness will be evaluated and should establish treatment goals with patients. Because the line between acute pain and initial chronic pain is not always clear, it might be difficult for prescribers to determine when they are initiating opioids for chronic pain rather than treating acute pain. Pain lasting longer than 3 months or past the time of normal tissue healing (which could be substantially shorter than 3 months, depending on the condition) is generally no longer considered acute.

Simple Definition of palliative

  • medical : something that reduces the effects or symptoms of a medical condition without curing it

  • : something that is intended to make a bad situation seem better but that does not really improve the situation

  1. When I asked my doctor if she had read the new guidelines imposed by CDC – she claimed she had – yet when I mentioned the words ‘ well why is my dosage being reduced AGAIN if I am qualified for palliative treatment.
I swear the woman looked stunned.
I am confused. Did she fib to me or she doesn’t know the meaning of the word?
