Half of American Combat Soldiers in Chronic Pain Use Opioids

From the article:
Researchers at Walter Reed Army Hospital surveyed over 2,500 soldiers who had been deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, nearly half of whom reported combat injuries. The prevalence of chronic pain was much higher than the civilian population, with 44% of the soldiers indicating they were in pain longer than three months and 15.1% reporting the recent use of opioids. That compares to 26% and 4% respectively in the civilian population.

I wonder if our medical system will believe/treat these soldiers’ pain that was caused from injuries from COMBAT… or we will just tell them that they need to “suck it up”.. get some exercise…your pain can’t be that bad…  you don’t need that high a dose of opiates….I don’t feel comfortable filling your opiate/control prescription(s)…
Will those that VOLUNTEERED to serve the country.. have to now pay a SECOND PRICE when they get home with the pain from the combat injuries  and we question their pain or their need of opiates to help regain/optimize their quality of life.

  1. Lets revert back to the way Vietnam soldiers where treated when they came home all messed up and with missing limbs and not help them with their severe intractable pain.
This is the lowest this country has ever been when it comes to those suffering in chronic pain. This is sickening and it makes me want to puke my guts up.
Every last soldier that risked their life for this country should be treated with respect and dignity, they put their life on the line to make this a free country.
But it seems this country is no longer free from the chronic pain that confines millions of people who don’t deserve this type treatment.
