Should we BAN IT or TAX IT ?

Tanning Addiction: The New Form of Substance Abuse

http://www.skincancer.org/prevention/tanning/tanning-addiction

From the article:

Frequent tanners exhibit signs of both physical and psychological dependence. When a substance causes physical dependency, repeated use of that substance causes symptoms of increased tolerance, craving, and withdrawal.6 UV light has been shown to increase release of opioid- like endorphins, feel-good chemicals that relieve pain and generate feelings of well-being, potentially leading to dependency.

We , as a society, tend to deal with addictions in two different ways… put a draconian ‘SIN TAX”  on it or we try to ban it.. which typically creates a black market for  the product being banned… and all potential tax revenue just vanishes !

  1. Always on the cutting edge, Steve. Here we have absolute proof that opiate abuse is just like sitting on the patio. What’s next? Maybe you’ll tell us that narcotic addiction is a safer alternative to summer vacation.

  2. So if I choose to tan on the cheap in my own backyard, does that mean the Tanning police are going to bust down my fence and charge me a ‘tanning tax’ or drag me off to ‘tanning jail’? Or maybe we’ll be seeing beachwide tanning sweeps on the news of hundreds of beach goers being rounded up for tanning against the law. 😛
