NABP Issues Rogue Online Pharmacy Public Health Alert

The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy® (NABP®) today issued a public health alert to warn Americans about the serious dangers associated with medicines purchased through fake online pharmacies. A report NABP released today on Internet drug outlets found that 96% of 8,000 rogue Web sites analyzed continue to operate out of compliance with United States pharmacy laws, fuel prescription drug abuse and misuse, and provide an outlet for counterfeit medicines to enter the US drug supply – all of which significantly endanger the health and safety of Americans.

“The fake online pharmacy crisis has reached an epidemic level – they prey on prescription drug abusers and the most vulnerable members of society who rely on medicine every day for their health,” said NABP President Malcolm J. Broussard, RPh. “They offer easy access to potent medicines without a prescription and indiscriminately push dangerous counterfeit drugs. This problem poses a clear danger to Americans’ health and safety and weakens the essential relationships between pharmacists and patients. By issuing a public health alert, we are calling on pharmacists, physicians, and other health professionals to educate their patients about the growing public health threat posed by these illegal online enterprises.”

Can the war on drugs get any more dangerous… Heroin deaths are up dramatically and we only have solid data from 2012… now they claim that there is a EPIDEMIC of online pharmacies that are “filling the need”.. Chronic pain pts are becoming desperate to get pain management… Addicts are becoming desperate to get their next “fix”  I’ve seen the ENEMY and it is US !

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Representative Elijah Cummings (D-MD) are leading a bicameral investigation into price spikes for generic medications to determine the cause of these dramatic price increases and the effect they have on patients. They have requested NCPA assistance in gathering examples from patients and pharmacists in how these price increases have impacted patient care, such as are these price increases forcing patients into the Medicare donut hole sooner or are they forcing patients to forgo their medication altogether.

Woman Charged with Rx Fraud for Oxycodone Pills

The Queen Anne’s County sheriff’s office says 38-year-old Tina Marie Karasek has been charged with nearly 380 counts including possession of Oxycodone with intent to distribute.

Authorities say Karasek is employed in the medical billing field and handled billing for multiple doctors’ offices. Authorities say she used patient information to forge prescriptions that were filled at pharmacies around Maryland.

The Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office says Karasek is currently on probation in Wyoming in connection with a previous prescription theft scheme. She is being held on $200,000 bond.

This article didn’t state this.. but.. why would a person steal a pt’s information .. unless they could also get the pt’s PBM information.. so that they would get rid of the “red flag” of CASH and just have to pay copays. Also they would have had to have some sort of fake ID’s to match up with the insurance information.

If they used fake driver’s license… if the Pharmacist had access to the state’s on line BMV data base… they would have found that the licenses were fake/forged and all of these opiates would not have gotten to the street. Crooks using 21st century technology.. while we are stuck in a 20th century mindset.

Apparently the attorneys for the victims are going after ever entity that came close to or touched those contaminated Methylprednisolone injectable bottles. Of course, 60 some odd died and abt 700 survived with a lot of residual health issues.
