Age discrimination involves treating someone (an applicant or employee) less favorably because of his age.
Age Discrimination & Work Situations
The law forbids discrimination when it comes to any aspect of employment, including hiring, firing, pay, job assignments, promotions, layoff, training, fringe benefits, and any other term or condition of employment.
It is pretty common knowledge that most of the RPH’s >40 have BSPharm and the vast majority of Rph’s >50 have a BSPharm.
We also know that the there are few community/retail that really requires a PharmD for the Rx dept to operate safely.
If a employer advertises a job opening… with the requirement of having a PharmD… are they practicing Age Discrimination?
In the past most healthcare professions when their academic requirements are changed.. they typically grandfather current practicing practitioners with the new title.
Since this was a academic title and issue… we can all thank our alma maters for contributing to put us in this predicament..

Just try to get a hospital job with only BS Pharm now. This old gal went back despite the obstacles. There were many students sitting there with me who were in their mid 50’s. We were the ones that kept changing eyeglasses between looking at the screen in front of the classroom and our laptops!
I suppose this could be debated two ways. Yes, it could be age discrimination. Or, the retail chains are looking ahead to using PharmD’s for MTM and etc. And, yes, the pharmacy schools screwed us pharmacists with a BS. I am mad at my pharmacy school…have been mad at them for years….and never give them a dollar.
Your are right, there are some Senior RPH’s that went back to school to get a Post BS ..2yr non-traditional PharmD.. However, I think that all schools had to have a PharmD program in place for the incoming classes for the fall of 1990 .. graduating Spring 1994.. Meaning that the vast majority of PharmD’s will be <45 y/o
PharmD does not necessarily point to age. The one PharmD I know is in his 70’s and practices at a small independent. The two Rphs I work for are 40 (somethIng) and 51. Both Rph.
