She has just been told that all the chemo that she has been dealing with is not working and there is nothing else to try. She was also told that what little pain management she has been getting is ALL THEY CAN GIVE HER.
Over the last few weeks, she has become more and more lethargic. She has went thru so much with all the Chemo and its side effects – nausea & vomiting. You have done your research and you know that her pain will most likely get worse toward the end, and her practitioner says that they can’t give her any more pain management – don’t want her to become addicted!
If you caused your Daughter to have as much pain as you anticipate she is going to have to deal with – Child Protective Services would be at your front door.

Concern for a terminal pt.to become ‘addicted’??How can that happen,if theyre terminal?whatta crock.I’d be flying to Afghanistan to uproot as many ripe poppies as possible.
Here is a huge point, that every politician every other human being that does not know or is not a chronic pain person,,IT IS PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO PHYSICALLY FEEL THE PHYSICAL PAIN OF ANOTHER,,,,WHAT WORKED FOR 300 YEARS WAS,,YOU TAKE WHAT IS NEED’D FOR THE PAIN,,AS LONG AS YOUR VITAL SIGNS ARE NOT HARMFULLY EFFECTED,,AND IT IS PROVEN IT WAS THAT VERY OPIATE THAT IS/WAS HARMING YOUR BODY,,,,NO-ONE,,NO-ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO DECIDE HOW MUCH,,,BECAUSE THEY DO NOT HAVE THE KNOWLDGE OF THE ACTUAL PERSON EXPERINCEING THE PHYSICAL PAIN,BECAUSE IT IS LITERALLY AN IMPOSSSIBILITY TO HAVE THAT KNOWLDGE,,BECAUSE NO-ONE Can physically feel the physical pain of another,,,,,,politicians are not getting that basic human right,,they are not getting it ,,,,they do not have the right to decide how much,,,peroid,,especially w/adults!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!maryw
That “potential addiction” excuse is unbelievable. It’s immoral IMO. I hate thinking of a child in constant pain. (Adults too of course)
If that was my child OR MYSELF and already went through everything she did to ease the pain of the cancer, but none of it helped, and I know it would only take one more pain pill or a different kind to get a better quality of life, even though the “risk” but not guarantee of addiction is there, I would go for it without any doubt!
Those are NOT MY WORDS in that blog post, those are words that I have been told that parents have been told and/or spouses of an adult in the same position. My wife, Barb, has been a intractable chronic pain pts for > 3 decades. Hospital staff often does not appreciate having me around, because I know what the staff is suppose to do and will not hesitate to make sure that they know that I am aware of what is involved in proper pt care.
