CVS Health sets target for boosting Rx adherence

From the article:

By 2017, CVS Health aims to raise medication adherence among its millions of patients by 5% to 15% through new interventions.

CVS outlined its goal Thursday with the release of a new Insights Report titled, “Adherence: Why It’s So Hard and What We Can Do About It.” The report, by the CVS Health Research Institute, highlights CVS’ extensive study of medication nonadherence, key findings about why people stray from their prescription regimen, and the company’s efforts to boost adherence.

“The reasons why people don’t take their medications for chronic conditions as prescribed by their health care provider are very personal and complex,” CVS Health chief scientific officer William Shrank said in a statement. “Over the past several years, CVS Health has invested in research to help the industry better understand medication nonadherence. Our goal now is to apply this knowledge and develop new interventions that will enable us to improve adherence for the patients we support.”

In the report, CVS noted that almost half of people taking a medication for a chronic disease stop doing so in the first year, with the biggest drop-off in the first month. Among patients on statin drugs, more than 50% stop taking their medicine in the first year.

I wonder if they count the chronic pain pts as being non-compliant when their Pharmacists refuse to fill their legit/on time/medically necessary Rxs ?

Here is a quote from the DEA …

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is not trying to limit or ration access to opioid painkillers, according to a DEA spokesman who says “nothing should stand in the way” of a patient getting a legitimate prescription for pain medication filled.

“We’re not doctors. We’re regulators and enforcers of the law. If something is prescribed for a legitimate medical purpose, we’re certainly not going to get in the way,” said DEA spokesman Rusty Payne.

So is the DEA lying or CVS and other pharmacies discriminating against a certain category of patients ?

  1. Just as society has long imposed a stigma on patients with mental illness, it’s like the govt is now imposing via it’s own agenda to society it’s stigma of the legitimate chronic pain patient. ‘Tell a lie.often enough and people begin to believe it’s the truth’ …… (I think thats how that say goes). Is it.my imagination or has compassionate pain management been set backn 20+yrs thanks to the DEA and the opioidphobic hysteria?????

    • And as for the other medications, no after how many reminder call, beg, plead, demand, incentivesnyou offer, you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make him.rake his medicine…I see and hear this alot in NAMI.. I besides in patients bill of rights he has tje right NOT TO TAKE HIS MEDS IN A LTC FACILITY. So they should stop the contestants.reminder.calls etc….wasting a lot of time

  2. The DEA lies. Walgreens who had been filling for my son? The pharmacist whom I have known for years just told me this month they won’t fill his pain Rx’s because the DEA has been coming down hard on them. She used the excuse that his doctor out of the county. Couldn’t we get him a doctor closer? I said, “NO!” How many doctors spend hours with a patient? yes my son has LYME disease. A very chronic bad case of it. there aren’t many doctors to treat this condition in the first place. We have no freedom of or choices of doctors anymore! I asked if she would sign my paper stating why she couldn’t fill for him, She said no. She said, I know he is legit and that you live far out town but how many pharmacies do you pass on the way in? Oh maybe a few but the are grocery stores.
I was livid! Thank Goodness the pharmacy next door filled it for him. He had been waiting 15 days! He was very ill and in severe pain on top of his illness anyway after waiting so long. This can never happen again to him or he won’t make it. He will be dead. from doing himself in or the disease will do it.
This crap needs to stop! So I will fill the paper in and send it in on my own without her signature. What liars?? knowing you and your condition for years doesn’t mean squat! One time he was so sick? She offered to call him am ambulance a few yrs ago. I swear no body cares anymore! They turn face on you, give a blind eye. How can they sleep at night? Cruel is understatement! This is happening everyday to patients in FL. I’m sure it’s starting to happen in other states as well.

Something has to be done to STOP this! I really hope that ADA complaint works, if it doesn’t? Then what?
Forget CVS! They don’t fill for C-II meds in my area and never have.

    • Once a ADA fine is imposed.. You file with bop unethical/unprofessional conduct on the pharmacist and the pharmacy. As well as pt abuse, not meeting standard of care. In the mean time file complaint with insurance. Wags has contract to fill/bill rxs for the insurance beneficiaries file complaints with state insurance commissioner.

  3. of course the DEA is not going to get in the way and they never have TV as always blames it bad allows all pharmacies to continue order the same amount of pain killers they have in the past CVS chooses not to order them as much and dispenses much less than the morning was in Walgreens I ever thought about. CVS is turndown patient after patient after patient in regards to an opioid painkiller. When you take your medication at Walgreens they simply fill it as long as it’s in stock. Where cVS has the medication they just received. They feel they have control on the right to do whatever they want. They always have I always will. Maybe one day they’ll stop and realize Walgreens maidem few bucks this year and we didn why does Walgreens deals medications CVS doesn’t
