Is the typical management style deteriorating toward bullying?

I don’t know if it is a change in the number or the degree in which RPhs/techs willing to speak up and/or making posting stating their beliefs/views of how many in management function.

There was quotes from the NECC fiasco like “… the value of this production line is worth more than any (employee’s) life …” when one of the employees wanted to shut the line down because of a malfunction of the line.

I have seen words recently used such as “slavery” … “servitude” when referring to their jobs.

Some of the stories that have shown up in my email is describing someone in management literally having a “melt down” on a staffer over some minor incident.. What is more disturbing is in several of these incidents … HR and upper level management were brought into the discussion over such a incident – which was not the first time by a particular manager – and the manager remains in place.

IMO.. these sorts of incidents… seemed to be increasing and they are definitely against the company’s policies and procedures about hostile work environment. Unfortunately, when these incidents involve a tech.. you are dealing with someone who is probably financially living hand to mouth and cannot afford an attorney and more interested in getting out of the situation and on with their life. So if HR/CCO doesn’t do their job… it is business as usual for all involved.

I have been told that one chain has established a policy that they are encouraging the techs in the Rx dept to be “stool pigeons” and tattle on the RPh’s in the dept to the DM. I was recently told a story about one such store… where I cannot elaborate on the details…but… the evidence .. would strongly suggest that a tech was attempting to sabotage the RPH on duty… by setting up some mis-fills in what was to be returned to stock.. hoping that the RPH would not see them.. and could contaminate the drug stock on the shelf…and since more than one tech was involved setting up the RTS Rxs for a RPH to handle later… so which tech was the guilty party has yet to be determined. What is interesting is that the RPH caught the misfills before returning them to stock and put the bottle(s) to the side.. and the next time the RPH was on duty.. the bottle(s) had disappeared..

What is the mindset of a person who would be vindictive enough to potentially put pts’ health at risk, in trying to sabotage a RPH.. the fact that one employee would even sabotage another employee is pathetic. IMO… if such actions are not criminal .. they should be !

It would appear that some of us have not left their grade school/junior high attitudes/tactics  behind as we entered adulthood.  Hopefully, each one of these people will “push” the wrong person… and the entire weight of our legal system will come down on their head(s). I sense, the first such domino is close to falling… As far as me, I will sitting on the sidelines (in retirement) … encouraging others to follow the same path… and helping/advising them as much as possible.

  1. What you are describing is absolutely believable. I have seen a few excellent pharmacists targeted and forced to resign and/or be fired. Why this happened is up for speculation – but I suspect that, being long-term employees, it was financial or involved their unwillingness to be bullied any further. The most revolting aspect was the involvement of a technician that had worked alongside of them for many, many years, and for no apparent reason or compensation, was directly responsible for feeding information to the front end managers – who in turn reported everything to the Pharmacy DM. It revealed to me just how ugly and petty people can be. And another terrible thing was the obvious pleasure that the front end management took in the affair. Now the bloodthirsty jerks are pulling the same crap on the new Supervising Pharmacist. It is a horrible place to work. We are slaves to our benefits and the job market. The little big people are in their glory.
