Here is a legislative update that I got today from the Indiana Pharmacist Alliance

Legislative Update

Last Friday, the General Assembly adjourned. Actually it was very early on Saturday morning, about 1:30 a.m. But before they left, they passed at least one bill that was important for the pharmacy profession. SB 407, which started life as a simple bill to change the pharmacist to technician ratio, wound up containing 3 important pieces of pharmacy legislation. First it did indeed change the pharmacist/technician ratio from the old 4-1, to a more workable 6-1 ratio.

Who in their right mind believes that trying to keep track of SIX TECHNICIANS is MORE WORKABLE than trying to keeping track of just FOUR TECHNICIANS!

Of course, Indiana mandates technicians be certified by two different entities  PTCB  and ExCPT .. but a technician in training is just about anyone 18 y/o+ who intends to complete the certification course in one year… they are granted a one-year non-renewable permit for $25 and a completed application.

There appears to be nothing in the law that prohibits a pharmacy from having SIX technicians in training working at one time.. and no certified pharmacy techs working. One can only imagine the safety under such a situation…
