The “Lock-In” Pharmacy Approach to Rx Drug Abuse

A proposal to restrict certain Medicare beneficiaries to use only a dedicated, “lock-in” pharmacy for their controlled substances is now a part of legislation introduced by two House lawmakers.

House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee Chair Kevin Brady (R-Texas) and Ranking Member Jim McDermott (D-Wash.) recently proposed the Protecting the Integrity of Medicare Act (PIMA). The broad bill is comprised of a range of proposals intended to reduce Medicare fraud, waste and abuse. Its features include the “lock-in” pharmacy idea.

Every time they try to make something idiot proof .. they just build better idiots …

  1. Per Google: Medicare has no official estimate of the amount of money lost to fraud each year, but the Federal Bureau of Investigation refers to estimates of 3-10 percent of all health care billings.

  2. So if I read that right..the lock in is ONLY for controlled substances??? and they’re not required to fill other meds there which still go thru mandated mail order??? then doesn’t that defeat the purpose of leveling the playing field of the independents and getting patients to use one pharmacy?? Are they going to pay a decent reimburesement rate?? Then why not pay a decent rate and mandate any willing provider and maybe more patients would opt to a community pharmacy given a chance. Get the govt out of healtcare PLEASE!!!
