FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) – Kentuckians would be limited to a three-day supply of powerful prescription painkillers in most cases under a bill that has cleared the state Senate on the final day of the legislative session.

The Senate voted 29-9 to approve House Bill 333 on Thursday. The bill forbids doctors from prescribing more than a three-day supply of prescription painkillers but lists many exceptions including cancer treatment, chronic pain and end-of-life care.

The bill also defines “fentanyl” and “carfentanil,” two synthetic drugs similar to opioids but much more dangerous. Fentanyl accounted for 420 drug overdose deaths in 2015, up from 121 deaths in 2014, according to the most recent drug overdose report.

The Senate made a few changes to the bill. If the House agrees by midnight, it will go to the governor’s desk.

  1. 3 DAYS? For what? A broken pinkie?

When I had my hip replaced, I was on opioids about 6 WEEKS.About 4 weeks post-op, my dr was wanting me to to taper, fine – I tried but was unable to walk due to the pain. Wrote and hand delivered her a letter discussing the problem and she backed off the taper. 2 weeks later, I told her I thought I was ready to taper back down and had no issues. THAT is how pain mgmt is supposed to work. You cannot legislate X number of pain pills for all kinds of accidents/surgeries.You gonna tell me 3 days worth of pain pills is going to be enough for an amputation or mastectomy? And now, these “thoughtful” doctors are pushing opioid-free mastectomies. They cut them off and give IV tylenol instead of opioids. For C-sections too. Seems to be a bit of misogyny going on here behind the scenes.

I digressed. 3 day limit is only going to cause more paperwork, doctors trying to get prior authorizations to RX beyond 3 days, or some docs saying f- it, deal with the pain, I’m too busy to do the paperwork. Once again, the pain patient – ALL of them, have been harmed.

  2. its the worse case of prohibition of our time,,,,and NO-ONE IS WILLING TO STOP IT,, more will die,,,and anyone who has the monies are the lawyers who can help and choose not to,,,,,,EVIL THRIVES WHEN GOOD MEN DO NOTHING!!!!!!!!mary
