Dr Phil on opiate use and addiction

Another Psychologist trying to describe the way that opiates act on the body/brain.  Dr Phil states that addiction… that people are genetically predisposed.  They talk about Jamie Lee Curtis, but what they don’t talk about is that her Father (Tony Curtis) was addicted to Cocaine and her half-brother died from a opiate OD.

Dr Phil stated that his own Father was a ALCOHOLIC… a insight into why he is so opiophobic ?

I wish that someone would explain that if a person gets a single Rx filled … how are they still taking that 30 days later or a ONE YEAR later.. at most,  a prescriber is going to write for a max of 30 days supply.

YES.. if someone is still taking a medication after an acute pain issue 30 days to a year later.. and the prescriber has kept giving them additional prescriptions… the person’s original pain issue was not really ACUTE but morphed into chronic pain and will have developed a physical dependence that they MAY experience a episode of withdrawal if they stop abruptly.

But just like a lot of other chronic diseases where a person’s body starts functioning outside of what we consider “normal ranges” and taking some sort of medication is often necessary to force the body to get back to what is considered normal ranges. They are not addicted to these medications but they are dependent on these medications to help maintain a quality of life and/or extend their life expectancy while maintaining a good quality of life.

If they are still taking it 30 days to one year because they no longer have pain put “likes the way it makes them feel” .. then we have a person whose interaction with a opiate causes a physiological craving … they most likely have an undiagnosed mental health issue of an addictive personality.

Unfortunately, many believe that these people will never become addicted or abuses some substance if we can just prevent them from every interacting with various substances we can “save them” and we can make sure that they “stay clean” and never go down that road of substance abuse/addiction.  Talk about delusional !!!

  1. ANOTHER “expert” , “Dr. Phil” who admits his father was a terrible alcoholic chose to not go down the same path. This is about the only intelligent comment I heard from this video clip. Why, if I choose to operate a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and am caught doing so, why do I lose only my driving privileges but NOT my privilege to purchase more alcohol? Because the possibility is that I may injure someone besides myself. I HAVE documentation for the last 7 years through pill counts and DOUBLE drug screening that indicates consistency in my screening that I alone have used my personally tailored medication. Has “Dr. Phil” EVER faced a lifetime, non cancer pain generating disease that natural endorphins simply are not produced at a level to ease pain adequately enough to function as “normal” as possible? Has he EVER been on the wrong side of the scalpel and the end desired result was not achieved causing lifetime, continuous, severe pain that the bodies natural pain suppressing process is is still too much pain to function as a “normal” human being? Matters that can only be done personally and not delegated to a family member or good friend do not end just because we are now in un managed lifetime pain. The “experts” that are trying to save “us” are literally making life extremely difficult to the point that patients are still choosing to terminate the pain the only way we can by……. self termination. To me, this is unacceptable. It seems as Pharmacist Steve has stated in his opinion ( which I agree with) that there IS a difference between addiction to a substance or multiple substances and a dependency on MEDICATION to function in a normal as possible capacity. Just because we have a non cancer pain generating disease, an injury, or a less than successful “corrective” surgery does not mean that our responsibilities to family, debt incurred and many other issues that require our personal attention, simply stop. As life will go on…..so will diagnosed painful diseases, injuries, and unfortunately less than perfect corrective surgeries with the “experts” still maintaining that we do not need pain management medication for millions of patients.

  2. Phil/He has a god complex. He condemns anyone who does not think like him.. all the “specialists” on his show are introduced as “my very good friend…” His previous job was fixing juries. He used fancy psychologic words to name what he did but whoever hired him won their case. You can boil that down and it is jury fixing. He is an actor exactly like Penn and Teller. No more.

  3. The REAL cause of addiction is available, whenever people are interested in learning. So far they aren’t. People have to suffer before they learn. But as we say in natural medicine, When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.
