From the article:

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) announced it will publish the Final Rule moving hydrocodone combination products (HCPs) from Schedule III to Schedule II tomorrow in the Federal Register. This Rule follows the recommendation by the Assistant Secretary for Health of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and is supported by the DEA’s own evaluation of clinical data.

December of 2013, the HHS submitted the reevaluation and their recommendation to place HCPs in Schedule II. The final conclusion to shift HCPs into Schedule II were based on the following findings: HCPs have a high potential for abuse (comparable to the Schedule II substance oxycodone), HCPs have a currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States, and the abuse of HCPs may lead to severe psychological or physical dependence.

If I was a drug dealer of Heroin or MJ.. I would be throwing a party… this is going to increase demand, prices and profits… and of course.. all of these drug dealers report their income and pay income taxes…

  1. effective 8/18/2014, Tramadol has been reclassified by the DEA as a schedule IV substance. I work and lead a productive life despite arthritis in my spine thanks to tramadol. This reclass has the potential to destroy the lives of hundreds of thousands of working people. Very short sighted policy making.

  2. Thoughtless,absurd cruel,and costly

  3. Pretty silly regulation. We’ll see if it really helps when electronic c2 prescribing is available in next couple years…

  4. I would bet AG Bondi and AG Zoeller are doing their happy dances right now. Comments from FB….paraphrased and combined…..I hope one of those DEA members has to contact his dentist in the middle of the night for a Norco prescription for serious toothache and no 24 hr store will be able to take it escript…or over the phone.
