Performance Metrics and Quotas in the Practice of Pharmacy (Resolution 109-7-13)

Back at the 109th annual meeting of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy.. passed a resolution

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) assist the state boards of pharmacy to regulate, restrict, or prohibit the use in pharmacies of performance metrics or quotas that are proven to cause distractions and unsafe environments for pharmacists and technicians;

NABP’s mission statement from their website :   http://www.nabp.net/about

NABP’s efforts to protect the public health are guided by its Preamble and Mission Statement.

Preamble
The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) recognizes and supports pharmacists serving as the health care professionals responsible for providing patient care that ensures optimal medication therapy outcomes. NABP also recognizes the ongoing and critical need for patients’ medications to be managed by a licensed pharmacist and state regulatory agencies to aggressively enforce standards of care.

NABP Mission Statement
NABP is the independent, international, and impartial association that assists its member boards and jurisdictions in developing, implementing, and enforcing uniform standards for the purpose of protecting the public health.

Anyone willing to “bet the farm” that some/many/most/all  individual state BOP’s will adopt this resolution?

This is another one of those “color me skeptical” moments for me…

  1. If you think anything will be done about the obsession with metrics, then you should also wait for the mothership because it won’t happen on this planet.

  2. There is one thing for sure: these chains have gone NUTS over metrics. There is a situation with Wal-Mart where input errors are suppose to be re-routed back to the inputting tech. But, this makes the ‘numbers’ look bad and the DM’s and Regionals don’t like it and want the pharmacists to simply tell the inputting tech to correct it. This way it does not show up in the metrics. The guy over this at the home office knows what is happening and wants the pharmacists to follow the rule of re-routing. So, we pharmacists are damned if we do and damned if we don’t. Just another stupid piece of fallout from the ridiculous metrics. The BOP’s should have someone hired to strangle every idiot at the top of these chains that come up with this stupid crap.

  3. I hope it’s the real direction pharmacy starts to go. Is it the first time NABP has set this as an issue? I wonder
