It’s a scene that may help George Clooney win an Academy Award. It’s also ironic, given the actor’s struggles with chronic pain.

“Goodbye my love, my pain,” Clooney’s character says in “The Descendents” as he prepares to tell doctors to turn off the life support machine that keeps his brain dead wife alive.

If Clooney wins the Oscar for Best Actor, “The Descendents” will have given the handsome actor the role of his career. But it’s a movie Clooney would have never made if he gave in to darker impulses while he was fighting chronic pain.

The Oscar nominee thought of suicide and “ending it all” because of chronic pain from a back injury he suffered while filming “Syriana” in 2005. The 50-year old actor hit his head on the floor during a violent scene and tore the dura around his spine that holds in spinal fluid. Even after surgery reinforced his spine with bolts, Clooney says the injury has never completely healed. Here are the truck accidents and legal actions that one can take when injured.

Clooney’s struggle with chronic pain and his ability to rise above it is a testament to not letting pain limit you or take you from your daily activities. Here are six more celebrities with chronic pain conditions:

  1. I, personally after being “tried” on every therapy from PT to aquatic therapy and everything in between including injections, infusions, “kratom”, CBD oil, personalized exercise etc. am totally disabled with the 80 percent reduction in medication that worked so well for the last ten years ( with Zero increase in dosage after titration ) I found myself with two herniated discs and was told by the surgeon I could expect about a 70 percent less pain level if I had surgery I would not have to use pain medication. It turned into two surgeries with a vertebra fusion complete with plates and screws. Well,, here I am 25 years later, had to give up ANY type work 2.5 years ago when my spine pain management specialist was forced to reduce my personal medication without even one milligram increase (in ten years) after titrated to a dosage that allowed me to keep functioning was “tapered” down to a useless dosage.. I held on to hope that my body’s natural pain suppression would “kick” back in but, I am now completely disabled. unable to carry out normal daily tasks that need to be done, i.e. grocery shopping, personal hygiene, cooking, etc. I have a great relationship, honest relationship with my specialist but I realize HE was forced to “taper” medication to all his patients that were prescribed over 90 mme daily. I would love to know how these celebrities seem to have defeated continuous, unforgiving, constant intolerable pain. It is almost unbelievable that this nations elect are not listening to the reported some 20 million or more patients that are now contemplating taking their own lives on a daily basis. I suppose you have to be a celebrity OR in congress to be able to manage pain now.

  2. Not sure I understand point of story. It’s great they are advocates, but what is the “secret” to beating Chronic pain? Im old maybe I missed reading something. LOL What are these “options” they are talking about? I only have one option and it was taken away

    • Like politicians they can not suddenly do what is right. Folks might get the impression something is wrong with them.
