Laid off today. Pharmacy tech. 11 months with the company. Was given the reorg rah rah as well. They blamed ‘the computer’ (something like your name popped up, it was not us selecting you which is stupid, why would you even say that)

Got the axe as Staff Pharmacist today. Same BS Restructuring, bla ,bla. The disingenuity is too much. That you may apply for other positions that may arise well knowing there will be none.Promising 60 days pay and an undetermined severance package.Heartless

Talked to a staff pharmacist that got laid off today. He said Walmart is cutting 1000 pharmacist across the company. Not sure how accurate.

Not just pharmacists, but PICs (which is generally a safe position).

Could it be that Walmart’s reported new policy of reducing the quantities of all opiate Rxs for new/acute prescriptions and their use of Narxcare that creates a “abuse score” – much like a “credit score” from one of the credit rating companies – on any pt that is attempting to get a controlled substance Rx filled..  has impacted their prescription business and a number of pharmacists and technicians are finding themselves UNEMPLOYED from Walmart… just more collateral damage of the war on drugs ?

  1. I heard that pharmacist Market Directors are next. Why pay pharmacist to be market director when they can pay non-pharmacist 50% pay? Why you need market director if there is a hiring freeze and the store has non-phamacy compliance officers? I guess all the hope Pharmacy schools placed in “provider status” and MTM services was just a ploy to milk 200k tuition out of youth, I knew when they said let’s allow techs to do more so pharmacist can be freed up it was code for getting rid of the professional. Also, a doctor office in town has a MA do their MTM as it doesn’t have to be a pharmy to bill MTM services. They are targeting “legacy” employees, those who were devoted to company and earned their PTO. 1 rph I know was cut to 28 hours a week and another 16 years, with a good amount earned pto, let go and they don’t pay out pto to “salary” employees. I believe a WAVE of pharmacist layoffs has begun and save money, live better, is just the first. So sad our pharmacists have no power. They are also changing pharmacy laws in my state to eliminate ratio and allow techs to do traditional pharmacist only tasks, like board inspections, true story. I really like techs, but feel pharmacists’ are systematically being made unnecessary.

    • market directors should have been first, useless level of management. Got terminated 3 years ago before I hit 20 years. too much pto . Saw it coming when there was an influx of new pharmacy schools. Flood the market the cost and quality goes down. Glad I got out.

  2. This week Walmart has showed once again that it values profits over patient safety and employee wellbeing by laying off up to 40% of its pharmacists, technicians, and other pharmacy staff. Phamacists and their staff are already working under grueling and very stressful conditions on their feet for 12 or more hours a day with little to no breaks filling hundreds of prescriptions, catching drug errors from prescribers, counseling patients, and providing immunizations and other clinical services. This move will only reduce patient safety and service while increasing the stress and workload for the pharmacy staff that remain. Many of the pharmacists and staff that were laid off had years, sometimes decades, of valuable experience. In addition all walmart pharmacies will have their pharmacist hours reduced thereby forcing pharmacists to travel to multiple store in an attempt to get their hours. Walmart is also reducing pharmacist overlap in most stores so that instead of having 2 or more pharmacists at a time there will only be one to handle the workload. This will only increase the risk of a prescription error and potentially cause patient harm. No one else is talking about this. Please if you care about health care , patient safety, employee safety/workload talk about this subject. Reach out to the news , social media, and to politicians please!

    • Exactly – They cannot seem to accept that retail pharmacy is still a labor intensive business. They want us to become “clinicians” without providing the proper staff, environment and conditions to make that work properly. All they do is pile on more work and then have the nerve to reduce staffing. Don’t get me started on “narcotic stewardship”. Chain pharmacy has ruined our profession. Like you say, long hours, chronic understaffing, unrealistic expectations, drive thru pharmacy. Every day I work I come home wondering if I made an error since I am working with more distractions than ever and having to do work that pharmacy technicians should be there to do. State Boards of Pharmacy do nothing as they as clueless to the working conditions in these places

  3. I worked in the Walmart pharmacy as a cashier and was just offered a promotion to technician. They let me go yesterday with no warning. I want even permitted to finish my shift.

  4. I got the axe Monday, now they’ve put me at customer service, 10 years worth of service and this is how they thank you

  5. Galesburg Ill-I was hired 5 months ago as a tech in this pharmacy.

I have worked SO HARD to learn the job, get certified, go to hours of orientation, watching endless videos! It hasn’t been easy to say the least. But I decided I was not going to give up. I made it my personal mission to never miss a day of work, and do everything possible to prove to everyone in the pharmacy that they will be glad i am part of the team.

Yesterday I was pulled into the managers office and told I am no longer part of the pharmacy. I am told I can transition to another job and have 30 days to do so due to not having enough hours in the pharmacy.

I am devasted! The pharmacy just lost a great employee. I was so dedicated and realized I was going to love my job. I felt like I was I finally knew my team members. I felt as if I would stay there until I retired.

I feel like it’s discrimination to hire someone and then tell them 5 months later they don’t have there position. Especially when other people call in sick frequently, or have a second job that makes them leave the pharmacy early every dsy.

Why can’t Walmart give me less hours in the pharmacy? Or take a hour or so from other techs to cut some hours? I was hired for part time, and would be more then willing to cut back on my hours to keep my position. I loved my job in the pharmacy.

I didn’t accept the job under the terms that my job might be elimated in 5 months. I have worked SO HARD to learn a very complicated job with no room for error.

I feel stuck on what decision to make about staying at Walmart. I certainly don’t want to work somewhere where your position is displaced whenever they feel neccasaey. I accepted a job with Walmart for the pharmacy. Not any other position.

    Heartbroken, and indiscive!

    • As Mr Areins has told us several times,,DUMP THE CHAINS!,,,Can u try a mom and pop pharmacy???R there any left in your town??I have 1,,,mom and pop pharmacy…Not perfect,,,but wayyyy better then a Walmart thingy..Geez Walmart denied my script the 1st time my hubby went there, for it was close to his job after work,,,just thinken out loud,,,,,,try a non-chain pharmacy,,,u have the knowledge obviously..Your obviously a smart lady to get it all down in 5 months,,,it sounds like any Ma and Pop pharmacy would be happy to have u,,jmo,,maryw

  6. Yes some rph got let go in Vegas which is saturated thanks to the local Rx school. Let go of those who has been with the company the longest then hire or keep newbies at 10 to 15 bucks less per hour. Makes perfect sense, quickest business growth is payroll cut. Corporate greed while we bleed. More bonus for higher ups. Sure the company is struggling or going out of business but CEO, CFO etc get 10 million or more for bonuses. Apparently pharmacy school marketing dept is doing a hell of a job recruiting There is a sucker born every minute. I guess the 200k plus in student loans and no jobs after graduation is printed in invisible ink

  7. If true, one less source for filling script legitimately.
Soon, other chains will join in. The f….. solution?

Time for that other ‘solution,, the one mentioned in English literature, about some detective… Scotland Yard stuff. I just can’t remember now. Who is it?
    Truth nevertheless.
