DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Ohio’s largest Medicaid plan says the amount of opioids prescribed to its members has decreased 40 percent over the past 18 months.

CareSource announced Monday it plans to reduce that number by 50 percent by the end of this year.

The Dayton-based organization privately manages 1.8 million Medicaid plans. It says it notifies providers who prescribe a large amount of opioids to members, and can identify members at risk for substance misuse.

CareSource says it has decreased long-term opioid prescriptions and noted other efforts, such as transportation to recovery services.

The organization says it also will start monitoring teens and young adults for opioid risks.

Ohio’s Board of Pharmacy says about 225 million fewer opioid doses were dispensed to patients in the state in 2017 than in 2012.

  1. Well I guess I’m going to be cut bc CareSource keeps making my Dr do a pre-auth every few months instead of every year. I knew there was a reason. I used to be on Oxycodone 10mg every 6 hrs, in 2016 right after the CDC Gidelines he took me off those which was working and put me on Mophine ER capsules 60mg one a day. The Morphine is more expensive so I assumed that’s why they did the pre-auth at 1st until 3 mths ago they started to want to do pre-aths without reason. My dr puts all his codes on my Rx etc.. now I know why! This is getting so crazy. I already lost my brother bc he was taken off his meds abruptly and eventually turned to street drug an OD in November. So sad , so many lives lost. He was 35 and had illicit Fentnol ( spelling? ) in his system.

    • Jessica;
      I’m so sorry about your brother, & about your doctor having to cut your meds. This is an insanely hellish time to have painful health problems.

      • Thank you so much Canarensis! It’s been pretty rough I have to admit. My brother actually was seeing the same doctor as I am. He took my brother off those meds and now he’s gone. You’re right it like they just want us to die or suffer for what!? Nothing bc the OD are still happening and will definitely continue to happen unless they focus on the actual problem.

        Thank you again X

    Then why the $@^)#!!! do they think that further reducing them is going to fix the “opioid epidemic”? Do these morons even look at their own “facts”?!?!

    And you know the chain saw surgery would be performed without anesthetic…

    GAAAAHHHHHHHH!
