  1. Excellent film that brought me to tears. I’d been stable, active as possible, a walker and hiker, a good family member, friend and community member while on pain medications for 20+ years. Despite doing so well and weaning myself to the lowest tolerable doses of all my medications and off of many, I was weaned further due to fear of the DEA and pressure from Workers’ Compensation.
My family and friends still expect me to help them as I did before being weaned. My hiking group asks why I don’t hike anymore. Friends ask why I don’t go out anymore. How do I explain?
My Mother has cancer now and needs me. How do I explain to my family that I can not travel any longer to coordinate her care and be with her at this critical stage of life?
Get the DEA out of Dr.’s offices!!

    • I understand your situation completely. Friends and family still come to me to help them, yet at times I wish I could say, I NEED HELP! No one believes – I guess I don’t look as sick as I am. If I say to much, then I’m complaining, yet it is a double edged sword! If you have a FB account, you might try what I tried. I wrote up “Cathy’s Grocery List”. Then under that I have “Accident, 2001″. I list everything I’m dealing with just like a grocery list. Putting it on FB and saying … ‘for those of you who have asked, here is my list. Thanks for caring.” No one asked, right? But some have cared, and maybe one has asked deeper than “how are you”. So doubtful you are lying. Your friends and family will read it because it’s NOT to them! It’s to those who have asked and cared! Using some Psch has helped at times. No one asks, but at least things have slowed down.

If that is too brazen for you…. I suggest a letter explaining, and that you have not wanted to bother them or be a burden since you are aware of their struggles. But the doctor has asked you to please stop and care for yourself for a while. (all doctors would love that!) Sometimes I have to write it out and then go back and cut some of the fluff. One page so you don’t loose them, yet getting the information out.

The last one that really got everyone’s attention is when my husband posted, as I was to sick to post. THAT got MUCH attention and many said they weren’t aware how sick I was. So a male always seems to help at times! It can be a husband, a brother, a neighbor, boyfriend, etc… But it holds more weight when it actually comes from another person. Even your friend. I will have to say, this one got the attention that was needed to allow me to lay off duties I couldn’t handle. It is a shame we can not say “we are sick, even if we don’t look like it” and not have the support we need. Especially from close relatives and friends!

Best wishes, and hope you find something that works. Maybe you can let us know for future reference!

I would like to use this (without your name) to point out in my advocacy the many issues we face. If that is okay, please let me know.

      • Hi Chatcat86,

It’s been a year since this video and comments were posted. Obviously, I’m not as familiar with WordPress as I need to be.

Of course you are free to use my story in your advocacy work, if you’re still interested. I’m very flattered and always willing to help if I can. We’re in this together.

  2. A very well done and informative video!

  3. Well done video.

  4. This is reality for those of us who live in chronic pain daily. We only seek relief from pain to try and lead a semi normal life. Our lives will never be the same as they were. It feels that no one understands us, our families try but it is hard to understand something that you only see but can’t feel. We are exhausted as pain drains us of all energy by fighting it 24 hours a day 7 days a week! This is a life that I wish no one has to live with. We are tired of being judged

  5. One of the best videos that I’ve seen as far as getting the message out there. This tells it like it is, thank you for sharing, it brought tears to my eyes.
